Commercial Security Questions, Answered
Practical answers to help you prepare an enquiry, compare a specification and understand the responsibilities that come with a system.
How Long Should Commercial CCTV Keep Recordings?
Commercial CCTV retention should follow your documented purpose and the time reasonably needed to investigate incidents. There is no single retention period that fits every business. Consider how quickly an incident would be reported, limit access to stored images and arrange deletion when footage is no longer needed, subject to a justified preservation request.
Can CCTV Be Viewed Away From The Site?
Remote CCTV viewing can be configured where the equipment, connection and access permissions support it. The design should agree who may log in, which cameras they can see and how accounts are removed. Speak to your IT team before installation, and check whether remote viewing or cloud storage brings a separate subscription charge.
Can Lost Access Fobs Be Cancelled?
Lost access fobs can usually be cancelled individually when the system records a separate credential for each user. The administrator should know how to remove a credential and confirm the change has reached the relevant controllers. Report losses promptly, and agree a process for temporary replacements so spare fobs do not become untracked access routes.
Will Access Control Work During A Power Cut?
Access control behaviour during a power cut depends on the lock arrangement, controller and backup supply. The design needs to address both security and safe escape for each opening. Ask for the intended behaviour to be documented and tested, including what happens when any backup power is exhausted and how authorised staff regain access afterwards.
Can A Door Entry System Call More Than One Desk?
A door entry system can call several desks or devices if the selected platform supports that configuration. Agree whether calls should ring together, follow a sequence or move to another destination after an unanswered call. Check the licence requirements and test the arrangement with the people who will actually answer visitors during working hours.
Can Existing Door Entry Wiring Be Reused?
Existing door entry wiring may be reusable after its type, route and condition have been checked against the proposed equipment. A working older intercom does not prove the cable supports a newer networked panel. A survey should identify any tests or replacement routes needed and explain how the entrance will operate while changes are made.
Does A Monitored Alarm Guarantee Police Attendance?
A monitored alarm does not guarantee police attendance. Response depends on the installation, confirmation arrangements, the relevant police policy and the circumstances of the signal. Ask the proposed installer to explain eligibility and ongoing obligations in writing, and keep keyholder details current so the agreed response route remains useful when an event occurs.
Can An Alarm Be Set In Separate Areas?
An intruder alarm can often be set in separate areas where the panel and design support it. This can help when one department works late or contractors need access to a limited part of the building. The survey should establish the boundaries and user permissions, then test the actual setting routines before handover.
Which Security System Should A Business Install First?
The first security system should address the most important gap in your current arrangements. Uncontrolled staff entrances may point to access control, while missing evidence after stock losses may point to CCTV. Explain the premises, working hours and concern in your enquiry so the assessment can compare physical security, detection and recording needs.
Can Security Systems Work Together?
Security systems can work together where their equipment and software support the intended integration. An access event might be linked to a recording, or an intercom might release a controlled door. Confirm the exact feature, licence and responsibility for support in the specification, because products sharing a network do not automatically exchange useful information.
Will Installation Interrupt Our Business?
Security installation can often be planned around your business activity, but some work may need restricted access, isolation or temporary entrance arrangements. Tell us about opening hours, teaching periods, deliveries and sensitive work areas. The installation scope should state the likely disruption and any tasks your facilities or IT team needs to complete first.
What Should We Include In A Security Enquiry?
A security enquiry should include the commercial site location, type of premises, service needed and the issue you want to address. Mention existing equipment and any insurer requirements you can describe safely. Please leave out alarm codes, passwords, sensitive camera layouts and incident footage, which should be handled later through an agreed secure route.
